This project provides a new cemetery chapel for an Ecumenical Roman Catholic Benedictine monastery in Belgium, carefully positioned to overlook a cemetery.
The monks in the monastery pray daily for the reunion of the Catholic and Eastern churches, and therefore the design takes the opportunity to explore the nature of duality in Christianity as well as in life: for instance the Byzantine vs Latin liturgy, Christ’s humanity vs divinity; light vs darkness and, above all; life vs death.
The chapel’s design aims to materialise concepts in the form of a small, semi-transparent wooden structure that can be experienced viscerally.
